Labour accused of putting illegal migrants before Warrington residents

THE Labour group on Warrington Borough Council has been accused of putting illegal migrants before Warrington residents

Cllr Rob Tynan last night slammed the Labour Council for voting against a motion to seek legal advice on an injunction to close the hotels in the borough, including the Holiday Inn in his ward at Woolston, that are housing migrants.

As Warrington Borough Council‘s only Conservative councillor, Cllr Tynan, launched his scathing attack on the Labour-run council after it voted against taking action to stop hotels in Warrington being used to house illegal migrants.
The motion, seconded by Cllr John Roddy of Reform UK, called for the Council to follow the lead of other local authorities and seek legal action to prevent the use of the Holiday Inn in Woolston and the Fir Grove Hotel at Grappenhall, for migrant housing.
Labour councillors, including both Labour members for Rixton and Woolston, voted the motion down.
He says this year has seen over 25,000 illegal small boat arrivals, pushing public services beyond their limit. While Warrington struggles with housing, GP backlogs and school place shortages, the Government continues to place migrants in local hotels with no consultation.
Cllr Tynan’s motion called for five clear actions from the Labour ran Warrington Borough Council:

– Legal action to stop hotel use, following the Epping Forest injunction model.
– A ban on HMOs for exclusive migrant use, supporting homes for local workers and students instead.
– Formal protest to the Home Office demanding consultation.
– Deportation of failed asylum seekers and a strict national cap on migration.
– Call on the Government to adopt the Conservative Party’s draft Deportation Bill to stop the boats for good.

Despite overwhelming public concern and a clear opportunity to act, most Labour councillors present voted against the motion.
Commenting, Cllr Tynan, said: “Labour had a choice – back the residents of Warrington or back the people smugglers. They chose the smugglers. Our community is being taken for granted. Local services are at breaking point. Our residents were never asked if they wanted hotels turned into migrant hostels – it was just done. And Labour are not only allowing it, they are defending it.
“Let’s be clear: these are illegal migrants. Most of them arrived in small boats and have no right to be here. And yet Labour thinks they should get hotels, while families in Warrington wait years for housing.
“Labour is not just out of touch. They are out of control. They’ve stopped pretending to care about local people. Their priorities are upside down.
“If you’re fed up with being ignored. If you’re sick of seeing your community sidelined. If you believe in putting Warrington residents first, then it’s time to send Labour a message and vote Conservative at the next election.”
Labour Group spokesperson Cllr Denis Matthews said: “Councillor Rob Tynan forgot, but both hotels were opened by his Conservative Government as they allowed the asylum backlog to develop in the first place. The Labour Government has committed to closing all asylum hotels, but WBC lack any power to change a situation that his Government put us in.”
Last week Warrington made national news following protests outside the Holiday Inn.
