Large grass fire on railway embankment at Latchford

THREE fire engines were sent to Thelwall New Road, Latchford, Warrington last night (Sunday), to deal with a large grass fire on an embankment next to a disused railway line.

The fire involved an area measuring around 50 X 50 metres and the crews, from Penketh, Birchwood and Widnes, used three hose reel jets to contain and, eventually, extinguish the blaze.
Due to the presence of peat, the fire was deep-seated and required extensive dampening down. Cadent Gas was contacted to attend the scene to assess a gas pipe that the fire may have damaged. Until they arrived, crews monitored the pipe with a gas detector with zero readings.
Earlier, a fire engine from Warrington went to New Lane, Appleton Thorn, to deal with a fire involving to tackle a blaze involving about 20 metres of bushes which were well alight. Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish.
