Stuck swing bridge brings more traffic chaos to Stockton Heath

MOTORISTS attempting to cross the Manchester Ship Canal in Stockton Heath faced delays on Saturday morning as the swing bridge became temporarily stuck open.

Writing on the Living in Stockton Heath Facebook page, a resident warned that the swing bridge by Morrisons was stuck open shortly before 10 am.

It led to lengthy delays in the area as people tried to find alternative routes over the waterway.
Alternative routes were via the Walton swing bridge by the Stag pub or over the Cantilever high-level bridge or Latchford swing bridge through the village.
By 10:30 am, the bridge leading to Stockton Heath on London Road was reopened.

Traffic in and around South Warrington was badly impacted by the temporary closure.
Proposed works to carry out urgent maintenance work on the swing bridge has been delayed due to a stand-off between Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council over who should foot the bill for necessary road closures.

Peel Ports has been contacted for comment.
