Lengthy traffic delays following lorry fire on M6

UPDATED: THERE were lengthy traffic delays in Warrington earlier today due to a lorry fire on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct near Lymm.

The incident which took place at at around 7.10 am was between the M6 northbound J20, Lymm Interchange M56 NorthWales to J21, Woolston, Warrington. Traffic was temporarily stopped due to the incident.



Emergency services including motorway police and Cheshire Fire attended at the scene, assisted by Traffic Officers.
Five fire engines attended from Lymm, Birchwood, Warrington, Runcorn and Knutsford on M6 northbound, Thelwall viaduct between junctions 20 and 21.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using three hose reels.
Update 9.06am:
Firefighters are continuing to shuttle water to the scene and are now tackling the fire using two hose reels.
A recovery vehicle is currently at the scene waiting to remove the vehicle.
Plans are being put in place to remove the contents of the lorry.
Update at 9.32am:
The fire is extinguished and the recovery vehicle is in place to start removing the contents of the lorry.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and allow for longer journey times while the backlog of traffic clears.
Update at 11.30am:
Two fire engines remain in attendance at the scene and the crews are using a thermal imaging camera to check for any hot spots and a hose reel jet to dampen down.
Firefighters are also using a grab crane to remove the contents from the truck.
