From Tottenham Hotspur to Warrington Town: Yellows land Marine in FA Cup

WARRINGTON Town have been drawn against Marine, who hosted Tottenham Hotspur in a famous run to the third round last year, in the next round of the FA Cup.

The Yellows made it through with a 1-0 win over Kendal Town at the weekend, while the Crosby-based outfit have already seen off Workington (after a replay) and Dunston in this season’s competition.

They produced the story of the 2020/21 season by reaching the third round, where they took on Premier League side Spurs at the Marine Travel Arena, albeit sadly behind closed doors due to covid restrictions.

Then managed by Jose Mourinho, Tottenham beat Marine 5-0 thanks to a hat-trick by Brazilian Vinicius Junior, while Warrington-born Alfie Devine became the youngest player to score in the FA Cup for a Football League or Premier League club in 10 years.

The two sides haven’t met since Marine were relegated for the first time in the club’s history at the end of the 2017/18 season.

The Yellows have won on their last two visits to Crosby, with Bohan Dixon and Tony Gray scoring in a 2-0 win back in December 2018, and Sean Williams bagging a brace in a 4-0 win back in August 2017.

The second qualifying round tie will take place on Saturday September 18.

Warrington were beaten on penalties at the first stage of the competition by South Shields last year, but did reach the third qualifying round in 2018/19 before losing to National League side Brackley Town.

It’s now seven years since Cantilever Park’s most famous night, when the Yellows beat Exeter City 1-0 live on the BBC.

They did make it in to the hat for the FA Cup first round proper in 2017/18 for only the third time in the club’s history, having forced a replay against FC Halifax Town, but having been drawn against Morecambe, the Yellows went down 2-0 at The Shay.
