Defeat in the rain for the Yellows in final home game for a month

GAINSBOROUGH Trinity maintained their hold over Warrington Town with a 2-1 win at a sodden GXO Stadium.

All the goals came in the first half in the relentless wind and rain, as the Yellows fell to a third defeat of the season and a sixth game without a win against the Holy Blues.

The visitors took the lead after seven minutes, Ronnie Kokkinos’ shot taking a deflection on its way through Mateusz Hewelt.

They had settled in to the game better and worked a nice opening for Frank Mulhern on 16 minutes, he opened his right foot to fire wide from Ashley Jackson’s pull-back.

Callum Edwards had Warrington’s first real chance, shooting straight at David Robson from a narrow angle, before the equaliser came on 33 minutes.

A ball found Edwards on the left and Robson was out of position, he resisted the urge to shoot off balance and instead set it across for Reece Daly to crash home first time.

But Gainsborough re-took the lead on the stroke of half time, Fraser Preston standing up a cross from the right that was headed up in the air by Jack Goodwin and it fell for Harrison Beeden to fire through bodies inside the near post.

They nearly doubled their lead in extraordinary circumstances in first half stoppage time, Mulhern shooting from the half-way line and with Hewelt scrambling back, the wind caused it to dip late when it had appeared to be sailing over and it came back off the crossbar with the ‘keeper beaten.

Warrington took charge of the second half, but found it difficult to break down the opposition.

Edwards and Goodwin had shots straight at the ‘keeper, before the introduction of Theo Williams off the bench gave Gainsborough an outlet on the right.

His run resulted in Jordan Helliwell’s ball being headed over at the back post by Ben Blythe as Gainsborough looked to finish the job.

As it was, they did a good job at closing things out, frustrating the Yellows until the last few minutes when they had their best chances.

Daly’s curling corner went over off the back of substitute Reuben Denton, and then Daly had perhaps the best chance, curling over from 20 yards out.

Rio Hawkins, who came off the bench to rescue a point at Alfreton last week, had a chance to do the same in injury time but blazed wide from 10 yards.

The Yellows now have four consecutive away games in the league, owing to the pitch perimeter work being done at the ground over the next month.
