The Culcheth Cup Walking Football Tournament has raised more than £7,200 for two dementia charities after bringing together 16 teams at Culcheth High School.
The sixth annual tournament took place on Sunday, 4 October, with teams from across the North West competing for the trophy while raising money for Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society.
Four teams from Culcheth Walking Football Club, two from Warrington’s Enjoy Football CIC and ten other teams took part, with tournament newcomers Chester FC emerging as this year’s winners.
The event also marked the culmination of the club’s annual fundraising campaign, with a total of £7,214, including Gift Aid, raised for the two charities – comfortably exceeding the fundraising target.
Organisers thanked everyone who donated or sponsored one of the participating teams, saying their generosity had helped make the fundraising effort a success.
All proceeds will be divided equally between Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society.
As Culcheth Walking Football Club celebrates its tenth anniversary, it is looking to expand its activities by establishing a women’s team.
Walking football is an inclusive version of the game, open to men aged over 50 and women aged over 40.
The club is inviting women to try the sport at two free open evenings at Culcheth High School, supported by the Football Association’s Just Play programme.
The sessions will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, 17 November, and Friday, 20 November.
They will offer women the chance to experience walking football in a friendly and welcoming environment, regardless of their previous experience.
