Chance to have your say on North Warrington transformation plans at Burtonwood and Culcheth

RESIDENTS are being invited to share their views on a transformation plan to deliver significant walking, wheeling, cycling and community facility improvements across Warrington North, focusing on Burtonwood and Culcheth.

Warrington Borough Council has launched a public consultation on the ‘Reconnecting the Settlements’ transformation scheme. It aims to improve connectivity, promote sustainable transport, and enhance community facilities, creating a safer, more active, and better-connected place for all residents.

Funded primarily by £9.4m from the government’s Local Regeneration Fund (LRF), alongside smaller contributions from the council, the project focuses on three areas – Burtonwood, Culcheth and Winwick/A49.
This consultation focuses on the Burtonwood and Culcheth access improvements, with the council to consult on the Winwick improvements in 2026.
The planned improvements for Burtonwood and Culcheth, which will be delivered by 2028, are:

Burtonwood

• Upgrading the walking, wheeling and cycling route between Clay Lane and Burtonwood Community Centre. This shared-use path will connect Clay Lane to Chapel Lane, bypassing narrow, faster-moving roads that currently act as a barrier to less confident users. It aims to improve access to job opportunities in Omega and the western reaches of Warrington.

• Major improvements to Burtonwood Community Centre. The new path will provide improved access, while building upgrades will include a new front extension for sports and events, a brand-new modern bowling pavilion and new male and female changing rooms for local sports teams, alongside internal improvements like a new office and meeting room.

Culcheth

• A new shared-use, traffic-free walking, wheeling and cycling route will be provided between New Hall Lane in Culcheth towards Birchwood. This will connect into Silver Lane, south of the M62 Junction 11, offering a safer alternative to the heavily trafficked A574 Warrington Road, which is currently considered an intimidating route for walkers and cyclists, improving access to employment in Birchwood Technology Park.

Warrington Borough Council leader, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “The Reconnecting the Settlements project is bringing significant investment to help us deliver a safer, healthier, and better-connected North Warrington for years to come. We’ll be making huge improvements to walking, wheeling and cycling, and creating traffic-free, all-year-round routes that make it easier and safer for everyone to get around.
“These plans will not only improve connectivity to employment hubs like Omega and Birchwood Technology Park but also provide much-needed upgrades to community facilities, starting with Burtonwood Community Centre.
“Your input is crucial – by getting involved in the consultation and telling us what you think, you can help us create the best possible project and deliver improvements that work for everyone.”
