Nursery children mark Remembrance Day with special RAF Burtonwood visit

Children from Dunky’s Day Nursery & Forest School, based at Gulliver’s World in Warrington, enjoyed a memorable learning experience as they visited the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre to mark Remembrance Day.

The visit gave the children a unique opportunity to explore the rich history of RAF Burtonwood, once an active base during World War II. They were warmly welcomed by John, a volunteer at the Heritage Centre, who captivated them with fascinating stories about the soldiers who served there and the important roles they played.
As part of their tour, the children were able to view artefacts and memorabilia that brought the past to life. One of the highlights was the chance to sit inside a real aircraft, sparking plenty of curiosity about how planes work and what life might have been like for those who flew them.
To finish the visit, each child received a poppy to take home, a thoughtful reminder of the day and a symbol of remembrance to share with their families.

Dunkys’ Day Nursery Manager Lauren Bailey said: “We’re so grateful to John at the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre for welcoming our children and making history come alive.
“His talk really inspired the children to ask lots of thoughtful questions about the past as well as the workings of the aircraft.
“It was a truly special experience that helped the children understand why we wear poppies and remember the brave people who served our country.
“The visit supported key areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including Understanding the World and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. By engaging with real-life stories and historical artefacts, the children were able to develop empathy, respect and a sense of connection to their wider community.
“It also gave our young children experiences and knowledge that reach beyond their everyday environment. Learning about Remembrance Day in such a hands-on and respectful way helps foster empathy, respect, and a sense of belonging within their wider community.
“They returned to nursery full of excitement, eager to talk about what they had learned and proudly show off their poppies, rounding off a meaningful day of discovery and remembrance.”

Dunky’s Forest School in the Activity Centre at Gulliver’s World is in the grounds of the theme park and occupies a large amount of woodland. There are multiple bell tents, canopies and unique structures as well as a nature trail for children to explore.
A dedicated Dunky’s team engage children in a wide range of activities using nature as a learning tool.
Forest School is a method of working outdoors with children using the natural environment to promote social and emotional development.
