Town’s businesses and charities invited to cyber awareness event

POLICE and Crime Commissioner Dan Price has invited Warrington businesses, charities and public sector organisations to a Cyber Awareness Breakfast event on Friday, November 14.

More than half of all businesses have experienced a cyber breach attempt and 85 per cent of all businesses have experienced a phishing attempt in the past year, according to Government research. This is why increasing cyber resilience knowledge for businesses, charities and other organisations is so important.

Spotting phishing emails or social media messages specifically is of vital importance because they can lead to much more serious cyber breaches, once the attacker has gained access to your computer or IT network.

The breakfast cyber event is the third in a series of events across Cheshire, organised by Mr Price, and run by the police-backed organisation, the North West Cyber Resilience Centre (NWCRC).

M r Price said: “Cyber crime can have serious consequences for businesses. The most effective defence is prevention. That’s why I’m working closely with the North West Cyber Resilience Centre to ensure businesses in Cheshire have access to the guidance and support they need to stay protected from cyber threats.”

Detective Inspector Dan Giannasi, head of cyber and innovation at the NWCRC, said: “It’s absolutely essential that small businesses, charities, public sector and other not-for-profit organisations understand good cyber security. Prevention is the key to reducing cyber crime so our outreach strategy means we work closely with the North West business and charity sector to help them understand the simple ways to stay safe.”

Businesses and organisations who attend the event can also sign up for the ongoing Cheshire Cyber Resilience Programme, which offers a bespoke one-to-one training session. This programme has been funded by the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner and Cheshire Police and is run by the NWCRC.

The North West Cyber Resilience Centre was set up in 2019 and is part of the UK-wide Cyber Resilience Centre network. The NWCRC has more than 2000 members and supports the business, charity and non-for-profit sectors with cyber security services.

The event will take place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington Conference Centre, Mike Gregory Way, Warrington, WA2 7NE on Friday, November 14 from 9.30am until 12 noon.
