Police are investigating a burglary at Appleton Thorn, Warrington, that occurred last night, as the family was all in bed.
The incident was shortly after 9pm and the intruder fled after realising the property was occupied.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “At 9:12pm on Monday 27 October, police were called to reports of a burglary in Pepper Street, Appleton, Warrington.
“It was reported that an unknown offender gained access to an address through the rear patio doors. It is not believed that anything was stolen at this stage.
“Officers attended and conducted a search of the area but there was no trace of the suspect.
“Enquiries remain ongoing.”
