MEMBERS of Croft WI served 147 afternoon teas to raise funds for various youth groups and raised £1,500 – and one penny!
The money was distributed to Croft Rainbows, Guides, Brownies, Croft ATC 70 Squadron, Nick Pyeman Scouts, Beavers, Cubs and Guide Rangers – except for the penny which was kept by the WI!
Following the presentation, members were entertained by the After Eight Ukulele band, an offshoot of the larger Hindley Ukulele band.
Their leader, Gerry Mawdsley, a seasoned ukulele player, was President of the George Formby Society and performed before Queen Elizabeth 11 at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2018.
The band played many old favourites, along with quite a few hits from the 1960’s by the likes of the Beach Boys, Everley Brothers etc., plus some amusing titles written by funny men like Mike Harding.
Members were encouraged to sing along and did so with great enthusiasm.
Band leader Gerry interspersed the songs with extremely funny “northern” jokes, which went down very well with the audience and at the end of their performance the WI cakes went down very well with the band!
The competition was won by Janet Woods, 2nd Louise Geekie 3rd Lesley Lloyd
