MAYOR of Warrington, Cllr Mo Hussain is calling on residents across the borough to come together in support of this year’s Warrington Armed Forces Day, taking place next Saturday, June 28 at Crosfields RLFC.
The annual event involves a fantastic celebration of the military community through the spirit of rugby league.
Kicking off with an exciting build-up, the Army Rugby League Inter-Corps ‘Lawson Cup’ 3rd Round Festival took place at Crosfields last week, offering a thrilling glimpse of what’s to come. The competition featured three high-energy fixtures:
• Infantry vs Royal Artillery – Infantry Victorious
• Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) vs Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME) – RLC Triumphed
• Royal Armoured Corps vs Royal Corps of Signals – Royal Signals Emerged Winners
These hard-fought matches now pave the way for the semi-finals in Aldershot in three weeks’ time.
The Mayor, who is also a local and parish councillor, had the honour of meeting Mr Ken Knowles, a remarkable 100-year-old veteran from Caton, Lancashire. Ken, a former WO1 (Conductor) of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, shared stories of his service during the Burma campaign and his deep-rooted love for rugby league.
Ken attended the event with his son-in-law, Colonel (Ret’d) Peter Jackson and granddaughter, Dr Emma Jackson, where he was warmly welcomed by the Royal Logistic Corps team. After presenting the Man of the Match trophy, Ken was serenaded by Fijian players in the RLC team – a moving tribute to his lifetime of service and devotion to the game.
Joining the festivities were:
• Lt Col Richard Grover, Chairman of Army Rugby League
• Mr Mike Donnison, Chairman of Crosfields RLFC
• Mr Paul Sculthorpe MBE, Rugby League legend and two-time Man of Steel
Cllr Mo Hussain expressed his pride in Warrington hosting such a significant series of events:“It’s a privilege for our town to honour the courage and commitment of our Armed Forces, both past and present. I encourage all Warringtonians to come along, bring your families, and show your support. This is more than just a rugby weekend – it’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and a celebration of our shared community spirit.”

It was fantastic to have the Mayor along to the Inter-Corp Competition, really got behind the players and staff and spent real quality time with Ken, his family and the players – great to see.
