CHILDREN at St Philip’s Primary School in Westbrook, Warrington, turned their hush into hope with a sponsored silence to support Mary’s Meals
They supported the international school feeding charity generating more than £700 with a new fundraiser.
The Key Stage 2 children, aged 7-11, raised £739.86 for the charity by participating in a sponsored silence. They embraced the unique challenge to stay silent for the day to help provide a brighter future for children living in some of the world’s poorest countries.
Mary’s Meals feeds more than 2.6 million hungry children every school day in 16 countries including Ethiopia, Syria and Zimbabwe. The promise of a nutritious meal at school attracts these children into the classroom, where they can gain an education and be given hope of a brighter future.
Lynne Davidson, assistant head at St Philip’s School, said: “Our courageous advocates came up with the idea to do a sponsored silence. The generosity of those who have sponsored our children in this endeavour will echo in classrooms far beyond our own, where a meal can mean everything.”
Supporters like the pupils at St Philip’s School play a vital role in helping Mary’s Meals to feed children in the world’s poorest countries.
The charity started its work in 2002, feeding 200 children at a school in Malawi, and is now reaching more than 2.6 million children across the world every school day.
Dan McNally, head of Grassroots Engagement at Mary’s Meals, said: “We are so thankful to everyone at St Philip’s CE Primary School for all their amazing efforts, which will help us give more hungry children the gifts of food, joy and hope.
“Thanks to the kindness of those who donate or fundraise, children who might otherwise be working in fields, or begging on street corners for their next meal, can instead be sitting in classrooms with full stomachs, learning how to read and write.”
It costs just £19.15 for Mary’s Meals to feed a child at school for a whole year.
