HUNDREDS of Winwick and Hermitage Green residents turned out in the sunshine to take part in a ‘Street Party on the Park’ organised by the Parish Council as part of a week of events to mark the VE Day 80 commemorations.

Picnics were a plenty as families and friends were entertained by 1940s classics as well as being treated to a brilliant live set of new music by John Anderton featuring Martin Haskayne.
Bouncy castles and party games with prizes kept the younger generation busy and a surprise visit from Riley’s Ice cream added the perfect topping to a perfect day all round.
The Street Party in the Park followed hot on the heels of the monthly quiz at the village community centre which on this occasion was transformed into a 1940s theme with fancy dress and raffle raising funds for local veteran charities.

Parish Councillor Emma Lavender helped lead and co-ordinate the special events along with the Chair of Winwick Parish Council Cllr James Herron and Vice Chair Cllr Andy Griffiths said:”It is always great when the community of Winwick & Hermitage Green comes out to celebrate together and this weekend has shown me once again just how important it is for us as a Parish Council to continue to commemorate key moments in history that shaped the way we live today.
“We have had such an amazing couple of days and raised over £100 for a local veteran’s charity, which makes it even more special.
“I would like to say a great big thank you to everyone who came and supported the events, and we promise to do more events like this for the community in the future.
“It is a lovely and fitting way to honour the service so many people gave for our freedom during World War 2 and in particular the 6 Winwick residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our tomorrows.”
