VIDEO: A special and poignant flag-raising event took place at Warrington town hall today to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Organised by Warrington Borough Council and supported by the Royal British Legion, Mayor of Warrington Wendy Johnson addressed those who gathered at the VE Day event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe.
She described the 80th anniversary of VE Day as on the the most significant days in our shared history, Victory in Europe on the day the guns fell silent.
With peace came joy as the streets of Britain filled with joy, with singing and dancing for a time of celebration and remembrance.
“Today we remember all of them. … some of those left Warrington never to return again.”
“Let us not forget the cost at what peace was earned.
“In Warrington, we are proud of our history with the links to Burtonwood airbase to the cenotaphs across the town, school children and residents are reminded every day of the part Warrington took – we are proud of our veterans and the armed forces they served, we are proud of the way this town came together in the past and the way we continue to support each other today.
