PROMPT action by firefighters helped save a historic Warrington church from serious damage following a fire earlier today, Saturday.
Fire crews attended St Luke’s Church off Old Liverpool Road, Sankey Bridges, following reports of smoke coming from the building.
An old mattress was found on fire and extinguished before the fire could spread.
Although redundant for many years, St Luke’s Church is understood to be a National Heritage church because of its historic stone pillars.
Local Cllr Mo Hussain who attended at the scene, praised the prompt response of the fire service.
“It could have easily been a lot more serious,” he said. “Thankfully, the fire was put out quickly and prevented any serious damage.”
