WARRINGTON’S streets are among the best lit in Great Britain.

A new survey carried out by curtain and blinds specialist Hillary’s, revealed that Warrington has the seventh best lit streets in the country – based on the number of street lights per head of population.
Warrington has a total of 28,099 council-managed lights – that’s 1,323 per 10,000 people, according to the survey.
Best lit town is Sunderland with 50,024 lights -0 or 1,780 per person.
Warrington has prioritised improving public safety through enhanced street lighting, according to Hillary’s, who sent Freedom of Information requests to 82 local authorities.

Yvonne Keal, senior product manager at Hillarys said: “It has to be recognised that street lighting plays a vital role as a crime deterrent and makes people feel more safe when out and about during the evening. However, it can be frustrating to have street lighting beaming into your bedroom while trying to sleep.

“For keeping light out, a range of solutions are available, from blackout curtains and blinds to shutters. Blackout options, in particular, help improve sleep by creating a darker, more restful environment, which also supports your body’s natural circadian rhythm. This is especially helpful for those sensitive to light or those who work night shifts and have to sleep during the day.

Thick curtains or blinds can also enhance home security by preventing outsiders from seeing into your home. Motorised options are available too, which can be programmed to close automatically, giving the impression that someone is home even when you’re away.”

  1. Yet when I enquired a few years ago about a street light for the lower stretch of Weir Lane I was told there was no money available, despite it being totally dark and leading to a newer estate. Very unsafe with no pavement on part of it.
