THE people of Warrington turned out in force to pay their respects at the annual Service of Remembrance at Warrington Cenotaph on Bridgefoot, one of a number of events taking place across the town.
The annual Remembrance event, which this year took place under grey skies, commemorates the sacrifice and suffering of war and to pray for the peace of the world.
As the crowds assembled and the town’s armed services paraded to the cenotaph on Bridgefoot, with other community groups and organisations, the pipes played ‘Flowers of the Forest’.
At one minute to eleven, Lt. Col. Les Taylor-Duff said:
“They shall grow not old,
as we are left grow old;
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.At the going down of the sun
and in the morning,
we will remember them.

This was followed by the Last Post and The Silence, followed by prayers from church leaders with music provided by the Salvation Army.
There was a scripture reading from Canon Christopher Cunningham, Senior Roman Catholic Priest in Warrington, followed by prayers led by The Venerable Simon Fisher, Archdeacon of St Helens and Warrington, followed by Kuldeep Singh Dhillon BEM on behalf of Warrington Council of Faiths.
Private Denis McGrath, The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, was remembered, along with all those who have lost their lives in conflict.
Following the service which ended with the National Anthem, Lt. Col. Taylor-Duff, introduced the Mayor of Warrington Cllr. Wendy Johnson, to veterans and their families.
For those who couldn’t attend, the event was covered live on the Warrington Worldwide Facebook page and later uploaded to Youtube, see below.
Local road closures were lifted post the remembrance event.
