As the nation unites in honoring the sacrifices of our Armed Forces, Penketh and Great Sankey RBL (Royal British Legion) invites residents to join in a series of remembrance events and support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Poppy Train in Warrington
On Friday, 8th November, the Poppy Train will pass through Warrington, wrapped in poppies as a powerful tribute to our fallen heroes. This Avanti train will carry a commemorative wreath from Glasgow to London, stopping at Warrington Bank Quay at 10:42 am. The sight of the train adorned in poppies will be a moment of reflection and gratitude for all who witness it.
Remembrance Sunday Observance
On Sunday, 10th November, residents are invited to attend Remembrance Day services held across town. In Penketh & Great Sankey, the community will gather at the War Memorial at St. Mary’s, while further ceremonies will take place at Bridgefoot and other locations, providing spaces for reflection and respect.
Armistice Day Ceremony
Marking the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Armistice Day on Monday, 11th November will see the Penketh & Great Sankey branch of the Royal British Legion observe a solemn service at the War Memorial. Veterans, local schools, and civic leaders, including the Town Mayor, will join the ceremony, honoring those who served and sacrificed for our freedoms.
Community Support and Thanks
We extend heartfelt thanks to the local residents who have created stunning Poppy Appeal displays, including the beautiful works by the Methodist Church in Penketh and local veteran Chris Young, whose displays honor the legacy of those who served. A special thank you also goes out to our dedicated Poppy Appeal collectors, who give their valuable time each year to support this cause.
Poppy Appeal Across Town
Poppies remain available throughout Warrington, with thanks to Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, IKEA, Marks and Spencer, and Golden Square for their continued support in hosting collection points this year. Every penny donatec helps provide support to today’s extended Armed Forces community.
As we gather for these commemorations, we stand united in remembrance, ensuring the legacy of service and sacrifice is never forgotten. For more information about local events or to find your nearest poppy collection point, please visit the Penketh & Great Sankey RBL Facebook page.
