Early goal sends Warrington Town on the way to another away win

WARRINGTON Town recorded another impressive away victory in National League North as they beat Blyth Spartans 2-1.

Matty McDonald sidefooted home a winner 13 minutes from time after the Yellows had been pegged back by Nicky Deverdics’ penalty.

Earlier they had made the perfect start to the match, taking the lead inside three minutes, just as they did on their way to a 6-0 drubbing of Buxton in midweek.

This time it was Bohan Dixon who was the scorer, lashing home a volley off the underside of the bar after Sean Williams’ corner had been punched away.

They thought they had two on 10 minutes when Matt Grivosti slid Tuesday’s hat-trick hero Isaac Buckley-Ricketts in behind to sweep home, only for an offside flag to go up on the near side.

Blyth had more of the territory without doing a great deal with it and there were no other chances of note until Dixon warmed the hands of Dan Langley in the final minute of the half.

The hosts finally troubled the goal on 55 minutes when centre back Finn Cousin-Dawson’s effort glanced the post from a Deverdics free-kick.

Grivosti had a free-kick well saved by Langley before Blyth were gifted a way back in to the match from the penalty spot.

Jordan Hickey’s pass in to the edge of the box prompted a sharp turn from Harry Gardiner that wrong-footed the Yellows defence, Gardiner eventually tripped by Tom Hannigan in the box for a penalty.

Up stepped Deverdics and he converted high to Atherton’s left to make it 1-1 after 68 minutes.

Blyth might have thought they were more likely to find a winner but they were dealt the killer blow on 77, Connor Woods taking the ball on the edge of the box and going the long way around to the right to pull back for McDonald to control and pass the ball home from eight yards out.

The score remained 2-1 to maintain Warrington’s unbeaten start to the calendar year on the road.
