Midfielder’s first goal for the club fires Yellows through to cup quarter-finals

WARRINGTON Town are through to the quarter-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup after a 1-0 win at Ashville last night.

Midfielder Aaron Bennett’s first goal for the Yellows saw off their Wirral-based opponents in tricky conditions.

Bennett was one of a handful of first team players on display, with fellow midfielder Jay Harris making his first appearance since the Northern Premier League play-off final win in May.

Four players from the club’s Under 21s side featured, though there was little in the game.

Regular back-up goalkeeper George Goudie clawed away a first half corner in the closest Ashville came, while Bennett forced a routine stop out of Dylan O’Brien in the hosts’ goal.

He struck the winner midway through the second half, after substitute Deacon Smalley had won the ball high up the pitch with a firm tackle, finding Bennett in space just inside the box and he opened his body up to curl a left-foot in to the corner.

The Yellows had beaten Ashville’s North West Counties First Division rivals Cammell Laird 2-1 in the previous round and are now in the last eight.

The draw is yet to be made, but they could come up against Football League sides Crewe or Tranmere.

Altrincham, Congleton Town and Cheadle Town are the other three clubs confirmed in the quarters so far, with Tranmere due to play their second round tie at Macclesfield next week.

Nantwich take on Witton, Alsagar Town host Hyde United and Crewe travel to Barnton in the other second round ties.
