Is it time to upgrade to an electric car?

0

We bet that if you’re reading this, you’re probably in the mood for a new motor. Diesel is falling out of favour because of its emissions, petrol is a safe but fairly standard choice, hybrids are looking favourable, and then of course, there’s electric.

These models offer zero local emissions driving and a simplicity that anything with an internal combustion engine simply cannot match. There are plenty of electric second hand cars for sale too, meaning you don’t need to go new in order to go electric.

But is now the time to go electric? Below we’ll highlight the pros and the cons of going electric then offer our five favourite electric cars right now.

Pros of electric cars

  • Zero local emissions
  • Simple and easy to use
  • Punchy performance for most models
  • Simple to service and maintain
  • Fewer moving parts than ICE – so cheaper to service and maintain too

Cons of electric cars

  • Electricity prices are fluctuating so it’s hard to definitively predict how much it’ll cost to run
  • Typically won’t go as far as an internal combustion engine car without needing to be filled
  • ‘Filling up’ takes a minimum of 30 minutes from a fast charger
  • And it takes hours for slower chargers
  • Makes most sense if you can install a charger at home

Our favourite electric cars right now

MG 4

When people say MG you might think of classic cars. But the truth is the company now mainly sells Chinese-made electric cars.

The brand offers great value, and this new 4 model proves it can do desirability too. The sharply styled hatchback takes on the Volkswagen ID.3, but does it for a cheaper price.

Renault Zoe

Renault’s smallest electric car has been around for ages. But customers keep flocking back to Zoes because of how easy they are to use as well as the sterling electric range.

Officially it’ll cover close to 240 miles and it’s practical too. Forever offered on cracking finance deals too.

Fiat 500 Electric

Fiat’s 500 is a favourite of new drivers and old ones alike because of its chic styling and ease of use.

The Electric model throws in a gorgeous tech-laden interior and peppy powertrain into the mix. We’d even go as far as saying the electric model is the pick of the 500 range.

Kia Niro EV

This second-generation Kia Niro EV is an incredibly popular electric vehicle. People love the looks, but it’s the practicality that really pulls punters in.

Its SUV bodywork provides good passenger space and boot room while its battery tech ensures range anxiety is a thing of the past.

Kia EV6

The EV6 has simply been hoovering up awards as of late and it’s easy to see why. It sits on a new dedicated electric platform and is the culmination of years and years’ worth of work.

As such, it feels like a seriously polished product. It looks great, it’s fast, the interior is sumptuous and it’ll do close to 300 miles on a charge
