DURING a recent visit to Warrington Energy Minister Grant Shapps saw for himself how a Birchwood-based business is leading the way in nuclear science technology.

Mr Shapps, secretary of state for energy security and net zero, visited MoltexFLEX with Warrington South MP Andy Carter.

The pair were shown around the Rutherford House laboratory by chief executive, David Landon, to find out about the work being carried out.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Shapps said: “British innovation is massively improving, and what Moltex is doing in Birchwood is on a different scale. We’ve got some fantastic research and development in this country.”

Thanking the Minister for his support, Mr Carter added: “We have world-leading nuclear science businesses in Warrington, researching new ways to create the energy we need to power our homes and businesses.
“The sector supports jobs for around 10,000 people directly and indirectly in the local area so it’s my job to make sure ministers know about the work being carried out in our town to benefit the UK and to champion investment and opportunities locally.
“Moltex really are at the leading edge of this sector, through the use of molten salt to make nuclear power – a solution that can benefit the UK and which can be exported around the world.
“The UK Government is putting nuclear at the centre of its strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, alongside renewables so this visit with the secretary of state was incredibly insightful and helped us to better understand the potential for this new technology.”

David Landon, Moltex’s chief executive added that he thought Mr Shapps was very well informed about the industry, including understanding the challenges for them in developing the technology.
