Radio General to celebrate 65 years of entertaining hospital patients

RADIO General – the radio station for Warrington Hospital – celebrates 65 years of playing music requests to patients next month.

To mark the occasion, they will be broadcasting live during the actual day of the anniversary – Monday, November 7.
And on Saturday November 12 they will present 65 years of Number One hits and the studio at the hospital will be open to visitors, past members and people interested joining, from 6 am to 5 pm.

The service was started by the Warrington Council of Youth in 1957 and was named the “Warrington Hospital Request Broadcasting Scheme”.
Initially, the service started with two llive request shows a week. During the 60s the name was changed to the present name of
Radio General. After a period of inactivity, it was relaunched in December 1973.
It has been broadcasting from the present Keith Inman Studios since 2001 and now broadcasts 24 hours a day with a mixture of live, recorded programmes and a myriad of music.

During the rugby season commentaries from the Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings games are broadcast.
Since 2017, Radio General has been available online at radiogeneral.co.uk or via the Tune-In app.
Many former members of the team have progressed into professional broadcasting roles in radio or TV.
