Former school for “pauper children” may become apartments

A FORMER school for “pauper children” will be converted into apartments if plans submitted to Warrington Borough Council are approved.

The scheme is at Rowan House – one of a number of 19th century buildings on the Padgate Business Park at Padgate.
Proposals currently being considered by planning officers involve external alterations to the house, originally built around 1880-81 as an industrial school providing accommodation and training for “pauper children” away from the main workhouse.

It was originally one of several buildings which provided two boys’ houses, two girls’ houses, a school building, superintendent houses and a porters lodge. Some of the buildings have subsequently been demolished but Rowan House and adjoining Maple House remain, linked by a building added sometime over the years.
The proposals involve demolition of the link building.

In the early 20th century, the complex of buildings was renamed Padgate Cottage Homes and in 1950 it was again renamed Padgate Hall. The school closed in 1953.
The applicants say demolition of the link building will enhance the remaining heritage assets and conversion of Rowan House to residential use will ensure its survival.
