Local catering company hugely impressed with culinary talent at Warrington & Vale Royal College

CATERING and Hospitality students excelled at the chance to showcase the skills they have learned and mastered throughout the year during an internal competition at Warrington & Vale Royal College.

Level 1 students were tasked with not one but two briefs: the first was a front of house themed challenge in which they had to lay a table for four diners, adorned with folded napkins and barista style coffee. Secondly, students took to the kitchen where they produced a batch of sweet or savoury scones to be enjoyed by a host of guest judges. The competition continued with level 2 students who were split into two groups. Group one was tasked with producing a ballotine of chicken with a suitable garnish, while group two had to produce a risotto dish of their choice.

The judging panel was made up of Rob Bruford from Dine Contract Catering and former Warrington & Vale Royal College student turned Junior Sous Chef at The French in Manchester’s landmark Midland Hotel, James Tomkins. The college would like to say a huge thank you to Rob for kindly donating prizes for the students and to Adam Reid, Chef Patron at The French, for sparing their fabulous Sous Chef for the day!

It wasn’t just the judges who were impressed, the students’ Hospitality & Catering tutors were absolutely delighted to see all they’d taught be put into action so brilliantly. Paul Ratcliffe, Chef Lecturer at the college, said: “the students worked to an extremely high standard whilst under pressure. I am so proud of the students that took part and the quality of their work.”

Rob Bruford, a local employer from Dine Contract Catering, went on to say: “I was thrilled to see so many young people with the personal attributes, positive attitudes and professionalism that is required to thrive in the hospitality industry.”

Well done to the competition winners: Ezren Kendrick, Jaiden Farrington-Tella, Kyran Lunt and Phillipa Makinson. Congratulations must also go to the fantastic runners-up: Leon Pickersgill, Charlie Jevons, Jessica Higgins, Ethan Stockton and Alexander Whittaker.
