Campaigners hoping for huge turn out at town hall protest opposing Central 6 street plan

WITH almost 5,000 people now signing a petition opposing the Central 6 Street plan, campaigners at Orford are hoping for a huge turnout at a proposed peaceful protest at Warrington town hall on Monday.

‘Warrington Residents Opposition to the central 6 street plan’ organised a small rally with just an hour’s notice to members that it was happening. Twelve campaigners turned up at Hallfields Road to protest with posters and banners in plain view of passing traffic.

Petition organiser Rachael Harper said: “I was actually impressed with how many of us showed up giving such short notice.

“While we were protesting we had many cars beeping us, giving thumbs up and we even had a bus driver acknowledge their approval to our signs, though one of them read ‘Stop the bus lane.’

“It also became clear that while half the drivers and walkers didn’t support the plans, the rest didn’t know about them at all. I personally was approached by several residents in the area who wanted to know what we were doing. Once they heard about the bus lane, they voiced their disgust and said they would stand with us at the protest on Monday.

“I just hope that we get the huge numbers we expect turning out to the protest because it will send a loud yet simple message to Warrington Borough Council; we expect them to uphold democracy and include us in decisions that affect us. If today’s small rally was anything to go, I am eagerly looking forward to Monday’s protest.

Rachael added: “Our message to Warrington Borough Council at this point is clear -We are a cross-party group who are imploring them to listen to their residents. We don’t support these plans and we want them to delay them until more people can be consulted!”

It has been arranged for the campaigners to present the protest petition to a senior representative of Warrington Borough Council ahead of the Cabinet Meeting at the town hall at 5.30 pm.
