URGENT supplies are heading to Ukraine thanks to Warrington-based Care UK Charity- the 70th container/lorry of aid going abroad to help those displaced by or facing conflict.

Founded by Appleton Thorn resident Nora Carlin, who responded after seeing the pictures of little Aylun Kurdi washed up on a Turkish beach in September 2015, the latest consignment will provide urgently needed supplies, including fully packed Moses baskets for new mums.

Nora said: “Thanks to Hope and Aid Direct our aid is on its way to Ukraine, safe in very experienced hands. Charles Storer MBE and his team have been amazing.

“Our volunteers and staff, too numerous to mention, have worked tirelessly to pull this aid together. When the crisis happened back in February we didn’t knee jerk react into sending aid that wasn’t needed or wanted. We sat back and waited. We talked to Dr Iryna Rybinkina working in the Ukraine. Was told of the work that Sebastian Zimny was doing. Both taking aid to war-torn territories, and both bring people to safety.

“We talked to Louise Devlin and Eva Grosman, both experienced in responding to crises like these. We haven’t sent clothes, they don’t need clothes just yet, we have sent funds to purchase food, water and fuel for their vehicles and were able to fund a minibus with a disability ramp. We have now sent more food, hygiene items and nappies, our (famous) fully packed Moses baskets for new mums and their babies. Hundreds of activity packs for children with pictures in them from children in the UK on our lorry. War is brutal. We try our best to provide the basics, to bring some small comfort.

Praising her volunteers Nora added: “Every one of you has been amazing, no matter how small or large your donation you have helped and comforted another human being.
We will continue. We will make more activity packs for the little one, send more funds, more hygiene items and nappies. Whatever is needed we will do our best to support the people of Ukraine.”

Since 2015 the Care UK charity has grown considerably across the North West with over 200 volunteers, a warehouse at Northwich and two stores at Cockhedge, Warrington, also helping people closer to home.
