Sherlock Holmes returns thanks to former Warrington book publisher

A book publisher who started his career in Warrington before embarking on a senior role with Penguin Books, has helped launch the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes classics.

In recent years there has been a huge upsurge of interest in the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, with blockbuster films starring Robert Downey Junior and a TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Now Mike Bryan, Director of  Baker Street Press Publishing, takes up the story: “Sherlock Holmes remains the most fascinating and enigmatic character in the history of British crime fiction.

“There has always been a high level of interest in Holmes and Watson, with 221b Baker Street receiving letters to the great consulting detective to this day.

“So we felt the time was right to launch the definitive set of ‘Sherlock Holmes Classics’. The collection comprises all the original nine books in superb gift editions – a retro-inspired full set of Arthur Conan Doyle’s wonderful adventures of Holmes at work,” he commented.

“Originally serialised in newspapers and magazines in the late nineteenth century, Conan Doyle’s famous collection of detective stories transport the reader back to Holmes’s bustling Victorian London, the misty moors of Dartmoor, the dizzying heights of the Reichenbach Falls and of course the cosy living room of 221b Baker Street,’ he added.

“It is the only collection of all the Sherlock Holmes books available in hardback and features original cover art inspired by the editions of the 1920’s,’ concluded Bryan.

Mike started his career in publishing in Stockton Heath, selling books in the reputable bookshop ‘Books Bradshaw’. Educated locally Mike, originally from Walton, went on to develop a successful international sales career with the publisher Penguin, becoming CEO of Penguin India and Penguin Canada. He subsequently launched Baker Street Press in 2019.

Launched by publisher Baker Street Press, the complete ‘Sherlock Holmes Classics’ collection of nine books is available from Waterstones and all good bookshops, or buy direct for home delivery via: https://ccsbooks.co.uk/product-category/baker-street-classics-sherlock-holmes/

  1. Sherlock Holmes is one of the all-time great literary characters. His quality has been demonstrated by the fact that so many other authors have tried to recreate the atmosphere and mystery of the stories. One of the closest to Conan-Doyle’s original style is “The Siam Question” by otherwise unknown Australian author Timothy Francis Sheil. It was originally intended to be one part of a two part Holmes Report, but I don’t know if the other part ever appeared. It’s a really good read, in any event.
