Jim’s working model fairground to go on show

APPROACHING retirement and looking to keep busy, Jim Birchall found lockdown had left him with lots of spare time.

He had always been fascinated by travelling fairs – so with the help of his brother-in-law – he started work on what they thought would be a two-year-project.

In fact, the job is finished – and the pair are full of pride for their fully-working model Waltzer.

It has cost about £500 for materials and has taken about 800 hours of researching, experimenting, sweating and delicate, detailed working fueled by copious amounts of cups of tea!.

Jim, from Longbarn, said: “I was having problems getting into model fairground shows, as many were cancelled and others could only take regular exhibitors. So I decided to have my own.”

The show will take place at the Alford Hall, Manchester Road, Warrington on Saturday, March 19.

Jim has had a good response from fairground modellers from around the country and a lot will be displaying their models at Alford Hall – although there is still room for more!

Jim said: “It will be an interesting show for all the family – especially the children who are always fascinated by the larger models.

“Various size models will be on display from 1;76th right up to 1;10th The larger model is a 5ft across ride that packs up onto its own model trucks!”
