New plan for underground car storage facility on former airfield

A THIRD planning application has been submitted for an underground car storage facility on the former Stretton airfield, at Appleton, Warrington.

The proposal being put forward to Warrington Borough Council planners is a facility for about 68 cars – the private collection of applicant Duncan Cameron.

It differs from the two earlier applications – both of which were approved – in that it involves a smaller number of vehicles and no longer involves a house.
But the applicant has made it clear that it involves a facility for his own private collection of cars, that there will be no public access and that there is no intention to use the former airfield for motorsport.

The new, more modest, proposal involves a subterranean car storage facility, for about 68 vehicles, a two-storey above ground storage building and the formation of an earth bund.
The first application, in 2015 had proposed sotrage on two levels for 120 vehicles.

In 2019, a second scheme involved storage underground for 50 vehicles but also included a four-storey houose.

The new application states that due to changed circumstances, the house is no longer required. But an above-ground storage building and earth bund are proposed. The rest of the former airfield site will continue to be used for agriculture. Access would be from Arley Road, Appleton.

One public objection has been received by Warrington Borough Council, expressing concerns about existing heavy traffic on the local road network.
