WARRINGTON Rylands kept up the pressure on the league leaders at the top of the NPL West comprehensively beating Glossop North End 4-0.
A strong wind gusting around the Gorsey Lane arena made for difficult conditions and a scrappy game, especially in the first half.
There were few clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities in the first half; the visitor’s Jamie Rainford had the best chance of the opening exchanges.
His powerful shot was beaten away by Graeme McCall; in the scramble to clear the ball Glossop appeals for a penalty were ignored.
In the 20th minute a Rylands free-kick caused confusion in the Glossop six-yard box, Joe Coveney’s shot from close range was blocked and several other attempts were cleared off the line as the ball was eventually smuggled away to safety.
On the half-hour Glossop goalkeeper Harry Allen did well to turn a David Webb divining header around the post for a corner. The resultant corner was turned behind for another corner, the second delivery from Declan Walker was met by Adam Buxton who bulleted his header into the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Webb threaded a pass through the centre of the Glossop defence into the path of Kane Drummond. Rylands leading goal scorer made no mistake slotting the ball past Allen.
Drummond notched his second goal of the afternoon in the 69th minute with a fine solo goal. Picking up a loose ball he burst through the heart of the Glossop defence to slip the ball past Allen.
Webb completed the scoring in the 72nd minute firing home from the edge of the area having been found by Andy Scarisbrick’s ball over the top of the defence.
The visitors, who had posed little threat to Rylands goal since the 5th minute, almost snatched a late consolation goal when a Drew Lowe shot struck Rylands’ crossbar.
Meanwhile, Warrington Rylands announced a trio of signings on Friday, all with experience of playing at higher levels. Signing in at Gorsey Lane are Will Appleyard, Johnny Hunt and South African international Dean Furman.
Capped 55 times by South Africa, Furman a midfielder has been playing for Altrincham whom he joined in 2021 from Carlisle United. The 33-year-old started his career with Glasgow Rangers and has also played for Bradford City, Oldham Athletic, Doncaster Rovers and SuperSport United. He made his first appearance off the bench yesterday.
Hunt a 31-year-old utility player joins from Connah’s Quay Nomads having started his career at Wrexham. An England C international he has also played for Cambridge United, Chester, Mansfield Town, Stevange, Hamilton Accies, Kettering Town and Prestatyn Town. He was an unused sub on the bench yesterday.
Goalkeeper Appleyard, aged 22, came through the youth system at home town club Crewe Alexandra. Having played for Steveange, FC Halifax Town and Oldham Athletic he joins from Tadcaster Albion.
