Warrington’s Golden Olympians receive New Year Honours

WARRINGTON’S Olympic swimming heroes Kathleen Dawson and James Guy have been awarded MBEs in The Queen’s New Year honours list.

Kathleen and James received their honours in recognition of their achievements in Tokyo, when they became the town’s first Olympic gold medallists and were both members of The Mixed Medley Relay squad with Adam Peaty and Anna Hopkin, setting a new world record as they celebrated victory.

James aged 26, won a hat-trick of medals at the games, with a silver in the men’s 4×100 metres medley relay following two golds in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

The former Cardinal High School and Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School pupil, who grew up in Stockton Heath was honoured for services to swimming.

Kathleen who was born in Scotland but moved to Warrington aged three, was part of the same mixed 4 x 100m medley relay team.

Jane Nickerson, Swim England chief executive, said: “It’s impressive to see so many people associated with our sports being recognised for their achievements in the New Year’s Honours list.

“From unsung heroes who willingly give their time to help others to the elite athletes who are an inspiration to us all and enjoyed such a successful summer, these honours are fully deserved.

“Congratulations to everyone.”
