COLLEGE Tutor Mia Cathcart recently exhibited her impressive artwork at the renowned “The Other Art Fair” in London, presented by Saatchi Art – the UK’s leading artist fair.

Warrington & Vale Royal College Art & Design Tutor Mia was amongst 140 artists selected to take part, with over a thousand artists applying.

The fair, which takes place tri-annually around the world, allows art-lovers to experience and buy the work of emerging artistic talent. Mia has attended the fair twice in the past and was delighted to be able to attend once again, after last year’s fair was postponed due to the pandemic.

Mia said: “Getting to do the fair this year was amazing, and it was great to see people interacting with my work again.”

She has been passionate about art since a young age and specialises in using oil paints to create portraits of women. Mia says: “I love to work large scale and this is how I really started painting. I love the freedom and fluidity you can get with large brushstrokes and the energy this gives to the painting.”

Mia originally moved to the area in 2012, when she began a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Liverpool John Moores University. She graduated with First Class Honours and progressed onto a Master’s Degree, before relocating to Budapest for a nine-week artist residency. She has also worked for organisations such as the Liverpool Biennial and The Bluecoat, before going freelance to pursue her art career. Mia is also a studio member at The Royal Standard in Liverpool, which is an artist-led, not-for-profit studio and gallery. The Royal Standard offers studio spaces and runs a programme of exhibitions, residences and exchanges.

Mia decided to go into teaching after realising she really enjoyed running painting workshops. She undertook a PGCE in Further Education and graduated with a Distinction last summer. Mia loves the variety of her teaching role and says the best part of her job is “encouraging students to think about art in new ways and helping them develop as artists.”
