Highest number of new COVID-19 cases since mid-July as 220 cases confirmed

AS health leaders in the town urged caution following the first cases of Omricon linked to Warrington, a total of 220 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the town – the highest number since mid-July.

The 220 (143) new cases reported by the UK Health Security Agency, takes the total number of cases in Warrington since the start of the pandemic to 39,966 (39,746).

Infection rates in Warrington have fallen slightly for a third consecutive day to 1,098 (1,113) – 524.4 (531.5) per 100,000 population over a seven-day period but remain above the national average of 498 (495.8) per 100,000, which have risen again.

While no further COVID-19 related deaths have been reported at Warrington Hospital, inpatient numbers have risen from 29-31, including four in ICU, while three patients have been discharged in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the UK has recorded 448 new Omicron cases in the latest 24-hour period – taking the total to 1,265. It comes after 249 new infections of the COVID-19 variant were reported on Thursday. A total of 58,194 COVID infections were reported across the UK, the highest daily increase in cases since January 9 this year and the sixth biggest rise on record for the UK.

The total number of deaths in Warrington within 28 days of a positive test reported by Public Health England is currently 527 (527) 251.7 per 100,000 population compared to the national rate of 218.
The total number of deaths with Covid-19 on the death certificate in Warrington reported by Public Health England in all settings is 611 (611).
