LiveWire’s popular libraries Reading Challenge held every summer has returned this winter with an online scheme to help youngsters keep reading over the festive season.

The Reading Agency has launched its ‘Winter Mini Challenge’ and LiveWire Libraries are getting involved.

The Winter Mini Challenge is open now and runs until Friday 19th February 2021.

Over the school holidays children can read less than usual, but the Winter Mini Challenge encourages children to keep up their reading habits over the Christmas school break, with a free website featuring rewards and incentives for reading and reviewing books.

This year’s Mini Challenge features characters from the ‘Knights Of’ series of books and includes a booklist of titles to try during the challenge. The list is full of heroes that inspire, challenge and push the definition of what it means to be a hero. Theirs is something for every age, and even some recommendations for teenagers and young adults who would like to get heroic too!

To take part, children simply register read three or more books – these can be any books of their choice. Every time they finish a book, they add it to their list online and leave a short book review.

Reaching their online reading goal will unlock a virtual badge and a special ‘Everyone is a Hero’ certificate to print off and keep.

There’s also a whole host of fun activities, videos and reading recommendations, plus an exciting competition.

LiveWire’s community librarian team is hoping lots of their young library members take part – either by reading books borrowed from the libraries or virtual e-books.

Rachel Ralston, LiveWire’s Strategic Library Manager, said: “The Winter Mini Challenge builds on the success of the Summer Reading Challenge and will help encourage children to continue reading over the festive break. We know reading progress has been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and all the team at LiveWire want to help support young readers as much as possible. We hope lots of our young library members sign up to the challenge and enjoy some heroic stories this winter.”

Cllr Tony Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Community, said: “Our reading challenges always prove to be extremely popular, keeping children engaged in the joy of books during the school holidays – and this year’s Winter Reading Challenge promises to be yet another treat.

“Children can look forward to a range of exciting books, challenges, activities, videos and rewards, designed to keep them inspired and entertained during the festive period and beyond. There’s no better time to get lost in a good story than during the cold winter months, so I’m looking forward to this year’s challenge being another huge success.”
