JUNIOR members of Grappenhall Cricket Club have been crowned North Cheshire Cup champions to bring some cheer at the end of what would otherwise have been a disappointing season for the club.
The U15s defeated Toft in a tense final at Broad Lane while the U13s had an impressive win at Davenham.
In the U15s game, Grappenhall won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost only four wickets reaching a challenging 150 from their 20 overs.
Yuvan Sunderamoorthy hit 44, Shlok Ramakrishnan 34 and Lucas Read 49 not out.
Toft went for the runs but could only reach 123-4. Grappenhall’s wicket takers were Jacob Tovell, Bobby Tyerman and Lucas Read and a run out by Yuvan Sunderamoorthy.
Team coach Steve Knowles said: “All the players have worked hard on
their games this year which paid off today. Every player contributed in some way to the result. Well done to them all.”
In the U13s match, Grappenhall were asked to field first and dismissed Davenham for a modest 48. Wicket takers were captain Aryan Ashish, 4, Elliott Llewellyn, 2, and Harley Slater, Bobby Tyerman, Ollie Lloyd, one each and a run out by Shlok Ramakrishnan.
Grappenhall lost three wickets cheaply and deteriorating weather put pressure on the batsmen. Ultimately, Shlok Ramakrishnan proved to be too good with the bat, scoring an impressive 34 not out, helping to
steer Grappenhall to victory.
Team coach Mark Tyerman said: “The lads fought brilliantly and
got what they deserved after so much hard work through the season. They have been a real pleasure to coach.”
Club secretary Paul Tyerman praised the juniors for bringing some silverware to “Grappers” at the end of what had been a disappointing season for all three senior teams.
The 1st XI had ended up in the bottom half of the league table after early season hopes of promotion. The 2nd XI also finished well short of promotion and the 3rd XI were relegated after winning only one match all season.
But the juniors had produced some positives for the club.
“We expect to see a lot more of many of them as they are introduced to senior cricket next season,” he said.
