Urgent work to school roof costs an extra £34,855

THE cost of a replacement roof at a Warrington school increased by £34,855 following the discovery of unexpected problems after work had started.

Deputy leader of Warrington Borough Council Cathy Mitchell approved the extra spending – which increased the cost of the project to £282,515.

It was decided it would not be appropriate to retender the scheme as this would have left Cobbs Infants School and Nursery, Appleton, without a roof.
A report to be tabled at the borough council’s cabinet meeting on Monday, September 13, explains that when the old roof was removed, it was discovered that parts of the insulation also required replacing, increasing the cost from £247,660 to £282,515.
Because of the urgency of the situation, Cllr Mitchell approved the additional spending.
Had the work not been carried out, there would have been considerable risk and had it been delayed for the scheme to be re-tendered the school would have been left without a roof.
The cabinet will be asked to note Cllr Mitchell’s decision on Monday.
