WARRINGTON & Halton Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust maternity team project ‘WHH Continuity of Care’ has been shortlisted for “Maternity and Midwifery Initiative of the Year” at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards.
The project was developed to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect and to encourage women to make informed decisions about their care with the support of a midwife. It aimed to provide the opportunity for women to be seen in their community and for 100% of women in Warrington to have a named midwife, both objectives have been achieved.
WHH Maternity has been shortlisted despite the tough competition from hundreds of applicants. WHH Continuity of Care from the midwifery team has been selected based on its ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that the project has had on patient and staff experiences including local women and their families.
The maternity team provides care across Warrington, including to some of the most vulnerable families and women, whose first language is not English. The feedback from women, staff and students has been incredibly positive about the new model of care.
The project has been shortlisted as a pioneer which is championing patient safety amidst challenges that the health and social care sector continues to face and the WHH maternity team has demonstrated that they are leaders in this area and wholly focused on patient and staff experience.
Kimberley Salmon-Jamieson, (pictured) Chief Nurse said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for Maternity and Midwifery Initiative of the Year, recognising the collaborative efforts and dedication of our staff members over the last 12 months to successfully implement the Continuity of Carer project. We are committed to delivering improved outcomes for our patients, and to be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement. This nomination has been a tremendous boost to staff at WHH and recognises their efforts in delivering a new project during an already challenging time.”
The judging panel is made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community including Sue Smith OBE (Executive Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, University Hospitals Morecambe Bay FT), Rachel Power (Chief Executive, The Patients Association), Dr Hester Wain (Head of Patient Safety Policy, NHS England and NHS Improvement).
