Travellers vacate Silver Lane site leaving trail of litter in their wake

FOLLOWING the threat of legal action after setting up an encampment on Silver Lane, Risley, for more than a month, travellers vacated the site today – leaving a trail of litter in their wake.

Angry local residents took to social media to vent their frustration at the ongoing issues with travellers in the area.

Despite the borough council erecting a barrier on Silver Lane several years ago, travellers regularly gain access to the site.
The latest encampment was given temporary permission to stay, due to ongoing health issues, but was threatened with legal action after overstaying their welcome.
One concerned resident posted on social media: “It looks even worse than normal, but then again they had been allowed to stay for more than a month before enforcement action was finally taken. WBC really need to take action more
promptly and get the stalled process for a transit camp moving again.”
Another posted: “WBC need to get tougher, Warrington police need to enforce the law better if we need extra police to deal with this situation Cheshire PCC needs to address this immediately. It’s costing the taxpayers money!”
Members of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, Croft Parish Council and Birchwood Town Council have all expressed concern at continuing problems on Silver Lane, Risley, by groups of travellers.
The latest group involving five caravans, arrived on-site at the end of May and remained on-site for more than a month, due to ongoing health issues, which the borough council have previously said was non-Covid related.
Over the weekend some of the travellers vacated the site setting up briefly on the ASDA car park at Birchwood.
A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said “The travellers departed Silver Lane today (Tuesday) and we will clean the area tomorrow. The cleaning of Asda car park, Birchwood is the responsibility of the landlord.”
