New book on the history of Culcheth – and its characters

MEMBERS of Culcheth Local History Group have written a new book on the history of the village – “Culcheth Characters.”

The authors of the book have unearthed original sources to examine the lives of people who lived in and around Culcheth. Some were people who helped transform the village for the better, some were criminals and some were victims of crime.

The lives of many of this characters were changed by circumstances beyond their control – the mechanisations of weaving, for example, or reforms to the Poor Law system.
Others, such as the village doctor and constable helped make Culcheth and Glazebury healthier and more law-abiding places.
The authors have examined the lives of villagers of all classes in this generously illustrated book, which aims to give residents and non-residents alike a deeper understanding of the village.
“Culcheth Characters” may be purchased at Forget-me-not toys and books at the CPS Centre, price £8.50.
