WARRINGTON South MP has secured a meeting with Prisons Minister Alex Chalk MP to discuss illegal drugs at Thorn Cross Prison in Appleton Thorn.

Mr Carter has brought Ministerial attention to the rise in illegal contraband being delivered to the open prison following concerns over drugs being stashed in local gardens.

In recent months, Cheshire Police have stepped up patrols near the open prison after nearby residents reported packages of drugs, steroids and alcohol were being stashed in their gardens.

The Warrington South MP raised the issue on the floor of the House of Commons during Justice Questions in response to a question about action taken to reduce crime in prison.
Responding, Prison Minister Alex Chalk MP agreed to meet with Andy and local residents to see what further action could be taken to address local concerns.
Mr Carter said: “I’ve heard from local residents who’ve seen deliveries taking place in broad daylight, with items being hidden in residential gardens which surround the prison. This simply has to be tackled by both the police and HM Prison Service.
“I’m pleased that the Minister agrees that we need a comprehensive approach and I now want to see concerted effort, using the search dogs he mentioned and better surveillance around the prison to put criminals off and to stop any attempts in the first place.”
