Police seek witnesses after “shocking and unprovoked” attack on 81-year-old man

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a “shocking and unprovoked” attack on an 81-year-old man in Warrington.

The assault occurred last Thursday 22 October between 1.30pm and 1.45pm near to the Classic Home Improvements store on Knutsford Road, when a man has approached the 81-year-old and assaulted him in an unprovoked attack. He then left the scene.
The victim sustained injuries to his knee and ear, which didn’t require hospital treatment.
There were a number of witnesses in the area at the time who stopped to help the victim including a cyclist who offered to call the police.
Officers are keen to speak to the cyclist as they may have information, which could assist the investigation.
Sergeant Chris Webster, from Warrington Local Policing Unit, said: “This was a shocking and unprovoked assault on an elderly man and since it was reported to us we have been following a number of lines of enquiry.
“I know there were people in the area at the time who spoke to the victim and may have seen what took place.
“I am keen to hear from those people, in particular a cyclist who offered to call the police at the time, as you may be able to help our investigation.”
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning.
He was arrested this morning, Wednesday 28 October on Kingsway South in Latchford.
