Green Party “outraged” over free school meals decision

GREEN Party members in Warrington say they are “shocked and outraged” by the Government’s refusal to provide free school meals for children during the half-term holidays.

They say inequality and poverty have got worse as a direct result of the government’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic
Warrington and Halton Green Party leader Lyndsay McAteer said: “Getting rid of free school meals in like pulling the rug from under the feet of many families. The negative economic effects of the pandemic are most severely felt by those who are already struggling.
“A government that votes for hungry children during a pandemic can only be described as utterly cruel and lacking in basic compassion
“We need to be looking to create a better future for everyone. What was decided in Parliament last week is certainly not what we thought ‘levelling up’ was meant to be.
“The Green Party is advocating a universal basic income. This would provide a minimum income guarantee for all. We need to build back better with a comprehensive plan to tackle social and environmental injustice everywhere.”
Government ministers say money has already been given to local authorities who are best placed to meet any local need for free school meals during school holidays.
