MP pushes Council on road safety concerns near primary school

CONCERNED residents in Appleton Thorn have been in touch with local MP Andy Carter to ask for help in dealing with safety concerns around the local village Primary School.

Concern is increasing for residents of Arley Road, as due to COVID-19, the school is having to utilise different access gates for pupils to enter safely with the measures likely to continue through until September.

The MP for Warrington South recently met with Headteacher Mrs Jones who explained about their action plan to keep children Covid-19 safe which involves different year groups using different entrances. But this has subsequently raised safety concerns as cars and lorries travel along Arley road at speed with vehicles crossing the carriageway due stationary cars outside the prison.
In a letter to Warrington Council’s Chief Exceutive Professor Steven Broomhead, Mr Carter has called on Highways Officers to consider improved signage to raise awareness of the school and children crossing as well as zig-zag markings to prevent parking at peak times close to the gates on Arley Road.

Mr Carter said: “When visiting the school last week, I saw first-hand the issues that the school, residents and parents are facing, and there are serious safety concerns that need to be addressed.
“The school access onto Arley Road currently has no parking restrictions, meaning the school has to put cones out to stop parents parking too close to the entrance. Currently this is not fit for purpose and the road needs better, clearer signage to slow the traffic down.
“I’ve written to Professor Broomhead at the Council to ensure Highways Officers look at this as soon as possible so that we can help prevent any accidents from occurring”.
