THE long-awaited start to the cricket season in the Warrington area should have come on Saturday, with local teams in the UKFast Cheshire League due to start a shortened season.
In fact, heavy rain prevented any play in any of the scheduled games.
But yesterday (Sunday) Appleton 3rd team managed to play their game against Over Peover at The Grange, Latchford – and lost!
Winning the toss, Appleton decided to field first and restricted the visitors to 131-8. Paul Grumly took 3-12 and Roger Cawthorne 3-28.
Appleton’s reply was disappointing, Sam Thorley, 28, top scoring and Paul White hitting 17 not out as the team were dismissed for 89, giving the visitors a 42-run victory.
The Vivio Cheshire County League start their season this coming Saturday when, hopefully, Warrington and Grappenhall will see action.
Meanwhile, the Cheshire Women’s Cricket League start their season this weekend. But the two local sides in the league, Appleton and Lymm Oughtrington Park have decided not to take part in league games this year, although they will be available for friendly fixtures.
Rain hits local cricket – only one match played!
