WARRINGTON Borough Council is offering new guidance to homes across the town on how to best dispose of waste in light of the recent coronavirus outbreak.
In line with national guidance, the recommendation to households is that all waste that has been in contact with someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19, or is displaying symptoms and is therefore self-isolating, should double-bag and tie waste securely.
Waste from possible coronavirus cases and cleaning products used in areas where someone displaying similar symptoms should be placed in a plastic bag, put inside another bin bag and tied. The waste should then be put in a suitable and secure place.
Cllr Judith Guthrie, Cabinet member for environment and public protection, said: “In order for us all to minimise the risk of infection, we should be following the national guidance to self-isolate if we appear to have any symptoms of coronavirus. There will be times, however, when something we have been in contact with, such as household waste, needs to be disposed of or collected.
“If you have a suspected case of coronavirus in your household, bear in mind the important national guidance around cleaning and disposing of waste. When cleaning, you should use your usual household products, like detergents and bleach, as these will be very effective at getting rid of the virus on surfaces.
“Personal waste, like used tissues, and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste black bin.
“You can dispose of your other household waste as normal.”
