A SERIOUS collision involving two vehicles caused serious delays on the motorway on Friday afternoon, with tailbacks to junction 11 of the M62 at Birchwood.

The M602 was closed in both directions as a result of the incident near to Eccles involving a car and a lorry with the M602 set to be closed for several hours this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “There are currently significant road closures in place on the M602 between Manchester and Salford.

“At around 11.50am on Friday, police were called to reports of a collision involving two vehicles.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance.

“The road is closed in both directions between junctions one and two and is expected to remain that way for several hours.

“We would advise people to avoid the area where possible.”

Meanwhile motorists in Warrington faced delays on Chester Road of up to half an hour due to roadworks, with one lane of Wilderspool Bridge heading from Brian Bevan Island to Bridge Foot closed as a result of the work.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Earlier today there was a three-car collision on the A574 Birchwood Way close to the B5210 Woolston Grange Avenue. Police say there were no serious injuries.
