“Fracking ban needed right now” – Warrington South hopeful

LIBERAL Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South Cllr Ryan Bate has welcomed the Government’s decision to end support for fracking.

The decision was made following the recent publication of new scientific evidence on earthquakes linked to fracking.

But Cllr Bate said: “A moratorium is welcome but it is not a ban. An immediate ban is required right now.

“Wherever shale gas extraction commonly known as fracking has been proposed, the public and local authorities have opposed it. There have been real fears about noise, traffic, air pollution, impact on the countryside, earth tremors and the effect on climate change.

“Back in September I seconded a motion at Warrington Council demanding opposition to Government taking planning decisions on fracking away from local councils, so reducing local democratic scrutiny.

“Bur this belated eve-of-election policy will not distract voters from the Tories’ dreadful record on the environment. The Prime Minister is desperate to cosy up to his climate change denying friend, Trump. There is a real fear that if Brexit happens there will be a bonfire of environmental regulations.

“Action on climate change transcends national borders and can best be achieved if we remain in the EU.

“A Liberal Democrat government would declare a climate crisis and introduce a radical new programme of investment in green technology. As your MP, I would work hard for Warrington firms to gain their share of this new business and the extra jobs that it would bring. On December 12 you have the opportunity to vote for a brighter greener future.”
